Program Summary:
Recology is 100% Employee Owned. We have over 3,800 employee owners at Recology! It is the 7th largest company in the industry and the largest employee-owned company in the waste industry. Our program will cover various types of Household wastes and how to properly manage it using the local recycle facilities. Examples, Paint, Batteries, Motor and Cooking oil, Sharps, Cardboard, Fluorescent tubes, Green Waste. Food waste is one that most do not think about as waste to manage outside of putting it in the trash. This changed with SB-1383 going into effect Jan 1, 2022, that requires both Residential and Commercial customers to recycle their organic waste. By 2025, a goal is set to reduce the amount of organic waste disposed of in landfills by 75% and to “rescue” at least 20% of currently disposed edible food and redirect that food to people in need. Our Guest Speaker for March 2023 : Mr. Don Perkins Home and Travel Fire Awareness and Prevention
Our speaker for March is Mr. Perkins’ his background consists of education/technical training and over 55 years of professional experience since 1965. After serving in the United States Navy, Mr. Perkins worked in major municipal fire departments for 28 years, retiring in 1994 at the rank of Captain.
Concurrent with his work in the fire department, Mr. Perkins founded the firm, Fire Cause Analysis, in 1980. Throughout his career with the City of San Jose and privately as President of Fire Cause Analysis, Mr. Perkins has conducted or supervised over 6,000 fire investigations. He has a degree in Fire Science, and has attended the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg Maryland, the FBI Academy in Quantico Virginia, and the ATF Academy in Glynco Georgia. Mr. Perkins was the Chairman for the IAAI, CFI Testing Committee, which established and wrote the international certification test for the Certified Fire Investigator program in 1990. Mr. Perkins has been a CFI since the IAAI program origination in 1990, and a current “Pro-Board – Certified Fire Investigator” by the International Association of Arson Investigators and there is more! Our Guest Speaker for February 2023 : Sharalee Falzerano – Archivist Roseville Historical Society
Sharalee has been working in historic preservation for over 30 years mainly in an archival capacity and been with the Roseville Historical Society since 2015. WHAT HIDES IN THE MYSTERY TRUNK In 2015, while working at the historical Carnegie Museum in Roseville, archivist Sharalee was rummaging in search of artifacts in the basement when suddenly she stumbled upon a large metal trunk. Upon inspection, she noticed a sizable padlock, sealing the trunk’s secrets. At the time of discovery, it was presumed the key to unlock the trunk had been lost in time. Nearly a year later, within the 100-year-old office, (now the museum admin office) she recovered a bag full of trinkets containing an aged key. To everyone’s surprise, the key was a perfect fit. The trunk belonged to a Roseville native by the name of Alfred Hanisch.

Mike is the Director of Programs for the First Tee – Greater Sacramento. He has been a golf professional since 1993 and played professionally from ’93 – ’95. He was a High School Golf Coach from 2003 – 2008 and has been working full time for First Tee since 2007.
First Tee is a youth development organization that enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. Bruce Quick
Our speaker for July will be Bruce Quick. Bruce, a Lincoln Hills Del Webb resident, retired V.P. of Human Resources from Volunteers of America, has been walking in Europe since his retirement in 2016. He started his walking on the Camino de Santiago in Spain and has returned each year, with the exception of the pandemic years, to complete approximately 2,500 miles across Europe. His journeys have taken him from Budapest, Hungary to Porto, Portugal. He recently returned from a 350 mile walk on the Via Francigena from Lucca to Rome. He truly enjoys his adventures and is equally excited to share his experiences and photos with anyone who is interested.

Brian Shul
You are not going to want to miss this month’s luncheon and our guest speaker. Brian Shul was born in Quntico Virginia in 1948. He served as a Foreign Air Advisor in the Viet Nam conflict, flying 212 close air support missions in conjunction with Air America. Near the end of all hostilities, his AT-28 aircraft was shot down near the Cambodian border. Unable to eject from the aircraft, Brian was forced to crash land in the jungle. Miraculously surviving, he was severely burned in the ensuing fireball. Crawling away from the wreckage, he was finally found and rescued by a Special Forces team.
Evacuated to Okinawa, he was expected to die. Following two months of intensive care, he was flown to the Institute for Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. During the following year, he underwent 15 major operations. He was told he was lucky to be alive but would never fly again. After months of physical therapy, Brian was able to pass a flight physical and return to active flying duty.
Two days after being released from the hospital, Brian was back flying Air Force fighter jets. He flew the A-7D Corsair and then was selected to be part of the A-10 squadron at Myrtle Beach, SC where he was on the first A-10 demonstration team. As a final assignment in his career, Brian volunteered for and was selected to fly the super-secret spy plane, the SR-71. This assignment required an astronaut type physical just to qualify, and Brian passed with no waivers.
Brian’s phenomenal comeback story from laying near dead in the jungle of Southeast Asia, to later flying the world’s fastest, highest flying jet, has been the subject of numerous magazine article and an inspiration to many.

Lee Belshin
Lee Belshin was born on a farm in Lexington, Massachusetts. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he graduated from UCLA with a Masters of Science degree in Health Education. After graduation he worked for the Los Angeles Dept. of Health as a Public Health Educator. Later, he was active in the Life Insurance business and formed a new Life Insurance Company, EMPIRE LIFE.
Lee has been active for many years trying to inspire people to eat healthy and exercise in order prevent heart disease. Heart disease takes the life of an American, every 8 minutes. For this activity he received the American Heart Associations HIGHEST AWARD.
In his retirement he has become a Stand-Up Comic. Laughter is healthy and studies have shown that it helps prevent heart disease. For this reason his talks provide both humor and solid health information.

Chip Maxson
The speaker for the March luncheon meeting will be Chip Maxson, President/COO of the Sacramento River Cats. Chip played baseball at Olivet Nazarene University and received MSE in Sports Management from Baylor University. Chip interned for the Kane County Cougars and Memphis Redbirds before joining the sales team for the Frisco RoughRiders. He became VP for Ticket Sales for the Tacoma Rainiers. He came to the River Cats organization in 2012 and was named Pacific Coast League Executive of the Year in 2019. That same year the River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the SF Giants, won the Tiple-A National Championship.

Roselynn Gamboa Young, Au.D., CCC-A Doctor of Audiology
Our speaker for our November Luncheon is going to be Roselynn Young who has a long time working in the hearing aid industry. Please note this is not going to be a sales pitch. She is going to talk about how the technology has changed in hearing aids and the choices that people make when getting a hearing aid for the first time
Dr. Roselynn Gamboa Young, practice owner of Roseville Diagnostic Hearing Center, Inc. has been an audiologist for over 19 years in Roseville, California. She started with very humble beginnings. Dr. Young or “Roselynn” was born in Dumaguete City, Philippines and moved to the United States with her family in 1992. She and her family joined her grandparents in Sacramento who came to the United States in the 70’s in pursuit of a better life. She started working for Sutter Medical Foundation at 19 years of age holding different entry-level jobs while pursuing her studies. Roselynn completed her Bachelor of Science degree in 2000 and Master’s degree at California State University, Sacramento in 2002. While working as an Audiologist at Sutter Medical Foundation, she continued her education achieving a Doctorate degree in Audiology through A.T Still Arizona State University in 2010. Roselynn started a successful hearing aid dispensing practice at Sutter Medical Foundation, Roseville location in 2003. The experience gained from starting the hearing aid dispensing practice has given Roselynn the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully serve her patients. She has always been dedicated to her patients and always prioritizing patient service.
Roselynn had volunteered her time as a student assistant for the California State University Sacramento’s Maryjane Rees, Language-Speech and Hearing clinic director on a humanitarian trip to Hidalgo Mexico in March 2001. Her rewarding experience in Mexico validated her decision why she choose audiology as a profession. She saw the great rewards in helping others be able to hear their family and friends.
In 2005, Roselynn returned to her hometown in 2005 and collaborated with the Rotary Club of Dumaguete South, District 3860 and a local ENT physician in Dumaguete City Philippines. She provided free audiologic evaluations to children and adults. She provided donated hearing aids, earmolds and earplugs.
She has greatly dedicated her life and profession in helping others hear better. She makes sure that her patients are aware of the dangers of noise exposure to their hearing and always taking the time to discuss hearing conservation. She is very accommodating to her patients and gives options to their hearing aid needs. She gives you realistic goals and clear expectations. She works closely with her patients over the years and ensures that she is always there for them.
Personally, Roselynn enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter. She loves to cook, read, and paint. She loves arts and crafts and enjoys planting fruit trees and succulent plants.

June 9, 2021 MALCOLM TIBBETTS, A WORKER of WOOD
In 2002, after a long career in ski area management, I transitioned to that of being a full-time studio artist specializing in “segmented woodturning.” Welcome to my website. Malcolm Tibbetts lives in South Lake Tahoe, California where he had a long career in the ski industry before becoming a full-time segmented woodturning artist. Prior to becoming a “segmenter”, Malcolm spent many years as a serious woodworking hobbyist designing and making custom furniture – a background that ideally prepared him for his passion for segmented woodturning. His work resides in numerous art museums and in many prestigious private collections around the globe. Locally, his work can be viewed at the Marcus Ashley Gallery. As a teacher of “segmenting”, he travels extensively, conducting workshops and club demos. Malcolm authored instructional book, “The Art of Segmented Woodturning” and has self-produced eight instructional DVDs. Bob Hoffman is currently the President of RBH Associates, Inc, a consulting firm for Nuclear Energy. currently with 20 associates. RBH is headquartered in Reno, Nev. This company serves utility, supplier, and governmental clients throughout the world. We provide assessments, reviews, advice, and solutions to clients in the nuclear fuel, reactor, and service sectors of the nuclear energy business for current and proposed reactors in the US and around the world. Commercially we advise on bid specs, negotiations, organizational input, and financing. Technically we advise on reactor, fuel, service, and organizational problems. Bob Hoffman is recently retired from Framatome, ANP where he was the President and Sr. VP of their fuel business. There he managed and led the company in the US and far east for BWR and PWR fuel and services business. Prior to that, he was vice president of BWR fuel at ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Operations. He had joined ABB Atom Inc. in 1989 as vice president of sales and marketing and then became vice president of BWR fuel when they were incorporated into ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Operations. He had a 22 year career with General Electric as a fuels development engineer responsible for fuel design, testing, failure analysis, manufacturing engineering, project management, and finally as International Sales Manager for 10 years which took him to Taiwan, Japan, S. Korea, Philippines, India, Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy. Spain, England, Norway, and Mexico. During that time he worked in the development of UO2 fuel reliability, barrier cladding, superheat fuel, MOX, and fast breeder fuel. In 1981, he was promoted to GE’s National Executive in Taiwan where he managed all of GE’s business there for 5 years. After returning to the US, he became the sales and marketing executive for Avantek, a defense electronics company in Silicon Valley. Bob has been on the Board of Directors of four companies including the steam turbine joint venture with Taiwan Power Company
He has authored numerous papers and given talks on Nuclear Power internationally as well as consulted with government officials on a number of nuclear issues including Yucca Mountain waste processing.
He has given lectures at the Engineering Schools of Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. He as also lectured at the Darden Graduate School of Business at UVA about international negotiating. He has developed courses and lectures for the entrance of new graduate engineers in the work place and given lectures at Virginia Tech, Colorado School of Mines, and UVA.
As an avocation Bob is a skier and has been on the Nation Ski Patrol for 60 years and patrolled in Connecticut, Virginia, and at Heavenly in Tahoe during that time. He also developed the first Avalanche Search Dog training, search, and team in California and Nevada. He has also been part of the administration of the NSP including on the National Board.
Bob has been married to his wonderful wife Linda for 44 years and they live in Reno and Tahoe. They have 2 sons who are Mechanical Engineers in MD and VA with 2 and ½ grandchildren.
April 14, 2021 BIO: Michael Barrington
Born in Manchester, England he lived in France and joined a French Order of Missionary priests, spending ten years in West Africa, several of them during a civil war when he was stood up to be shot. He spent a year living as a hermit in Northern Ireland, was a teacher in Madrid, Spain, and as part of the British ‘brain drain’ taught at Univ of Puerto Rico. The owner of MJB Consultants, he flies all over the world monitoring and evaluating humanitarian projects and has worked in more than 30 countries. He is completely fluent in several languages, an avid golfer and academically considers himself to be over-engineered having three Masters’ Degrees and a Ph.D. On his bucket list is to pilot a helicopter, become fluent in Arabic and spend a week’s retreat at Tamanrasset in the Sahara-desert.
He has always been a writer and his first book, “The Bishop Wears No Drawers” (2017) is a memoir of his time spent in Africa, during a civil war. His most recent work, “Let the Peacock Sing” (2020) is an historical novel set against the backdrop of the French Resistance during World War II. He has just completed a second novel, a romance, which will be published in March 2021.

March 14, 2021. BIO: Catherine Matthews
Catherine Matthews is the Executive Director of an agency that has several Sacramento area Short Term Residential Treatment (STRTP) facilities. The agency provides residential treatment to adolescent boys with behavioral problems. She started at the agency 12 years ago as a therapist after obtaining her Masters in Social Work from UCLA and her Bachelors degree from Harvard University. She was originally born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and is the proud mother of two children. She will be talking about her experiences in the field and the evolution of residential treatment over the past five years from group homes to “Short Term Residential Treatment” facilities and the challenges that providers have faced.
February 10, 2021 BIO: Scott Williams owner and CEO of Moksa Brewing company.
Scott has lived in Roseville for 35 years and graduated from Roseville High School, class of 1993. After highschool I found my way into the car business where I am still the Parts and Service Director at Lexus of Roseville. In high school I started umpiring baseball and after high school I decided I would take that a little more seriously and went to umpires school, after umpires school I was able to work my way up to college and semi professional levels of baseball. I started Home brewing beer in 2005 and it was such a fun hobby that I dedicated all of my free time to it, I began to enter beers in local competitions and won a few metals and ribbons along the way. In 2008 I took the training and test to become a certified beer judge through the BJCP (beer judge certification program). In 2010 I was able to brew my first batch of beer at a local restaurant and turned that into a head brewer position at another local restaurant where I was the head brewer for a couple years until they went out of business, after that I got back into home brewing. Early 2017 a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to open a brewery, I told him that it sounded like fun but I was not sure I had the time to make it happen, a couple months later he came back to me a said we have an opportunity to buy a place in Rocklin and asked again if I wanted in, I figured that this was going to be my chance if I was ever going to get into the beer business so I took it. February 3rd we will celebrate our 3rd year anniversary at Moksa.
Moksa is a small craft brewery that specializes in making interesting beers that are known to many beer experts as premium in quality and taste.
